Grant Amount:  $75,000

Grant Term:  12 Months

Project Description:

§         Proposes to research the feasibility of developing a low-cost circuit design that allows air conditioners with three-phase motors to operate from a single-phase electrical supply with more than a 10% savings in electricity cost.  The proposed design is applicable to nearly all single-phase units, with only the compressor motor and the stated low-cost circuit design being different.

Proposed Outcomes:

§         A prototype will be fabricated and tested.

Anticipated Benefits:

§         Potential to reduce the new kWHe consumption of new air conditioners and new heat pumps connected to the single-phase distribution systems for residences, schools, motels, offices, shops, and small commercial by at least 10%.

§         The proposed three-phase motors may provide increased reliability for individual consumers.  The improved product features are:  reduced starting current, reduced flicker and lighting effect, reduced sound and vibration, reduced voltage sag, reduced electricity costs, and reduced spike, pulse, and harmonic distortions which might influence computers and TV.
