Grant Amount:  $74,626

Grant Term:  12 Months

Project Description:

§         Proposes to determine the feasibility of developing a method for producing dense ceramic electrolytes films on pre-formed metallic substrate, to form essential components of low-cost intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (ITSOFC) stacks that operate between 500 and 700 degrees Celsius.

Proposed Outcomes:

§         A metal-supported doped CGO solid oxide fuel cell will be fabricated and tested.

Anticipated Benefits:

§         Potential to provide advanced developments that may open the door towards a SOFC commercialization process that could be exploited by the various companies that are currently developing ITSOFCs for distributed power generation from natural gas, eventually providing huge benefits to California electricity ratepayers.

§         May provide a method to reduce the operating temperature of the core of SOFC, the membrane stack enabling the incorporation of cheaper, sturdier materials (such as stainless steel alloys) and ease sealing issues.

§         Potential to greatly simplify the manufacturing of sturdy ITSOFCs and assist in accelerating their commercialization.
