Project Description:

The purpose of this project is to research the feasibility of an innovative drivetrain design for large-scale wind turbines.  2.5 kW prototype drivetrain will be assembled and tested.

Proposed Outcomes:

·        2.5 kW drivetrain for controls development and testing

·        Prototype controller

·        Feasibility analysis based on performance of prototype controller and drivetrain

Anticipated Benefits:

·        Reduce the capital cost of installation of large wind turbines by 7%

·        Reduce lifecycle maintenance costs by 30%

·        Reduce the cost of power generation from 3.88 cents/ kWh to 3.46 cents / kWh
